The Lodge

Porters' Lodge

The Porters' Lodge, at the entrance to Lincoln on Turl Street, is where all general enquiries can be asked of the 'friendly' Porters (depending upon which you get! Some can be a bit grumpy...) There are noticeboards here with useful information (such as the current week's Hall menu), and a machine for topping up your Laundry Card. All your mail will be kept here in your pigeon-hole. The Lodge also tends to be the central meeting place in College.

Hall

The Hall is Lincoln's chief term-time refectory and is located in Front Quad, a spectacular piece of fifteenth century architecture decorated with portraits of past fellows. At the top of hall is High Table (not very high, just situated on a slight dais, but you get the idea) where the fellows and their guests eat.

During Full Term meals are available at the following times:

Monday-Saturday 08:00-08:45 Continental breakfast
Monday-Saturday 08:15-08:45 Cooked breakfast
Sunday 11:00-11:30 Brunch
Monday-Saturday 12:45-13:15 Lunch
Sunday-Friday 18:15 First Hall (dinner)
Sunday-Friday 19:15 Second Hall (dinner)
Saturday 18:30 Dinner

The menus for First Hall and Second Hall are identical, and cost the same (generally £3.95 for three courses for college members, about twice that for guests). Payment is made by scanning your University Card, and is automatically added to your next set of battels (College bills). Menus are posted on a notice-board in the lodge every week. First Hall is informal (you collect it yourself from the Buttery), while Second Hall is formal (you can still wear normal clothes, but must put a gown on over the top, and the serving staff bring the food to your table). Turning up early is recommended, as is eating very quickly - unless you want the plate snatched from under your nose before you've finished!

During Vacations, lunch and dinner are usually available in Hall, but times are more variable than during term, and you need to sign up in advance at the lodge.

Deep Hall

Deep Hall is the name of Lincoln College's subterranean bar. Cosy and relaxed with little nooks and crannies to hide yourself in, it is a great place to come and grab a drink after dinner. It is located directly below the Main Hall in the old wine cellars, and is accessible via Staircase 10 or from Grove Quad. Simon the Barman is in charge.

Deep Hall is essentially a members club (of which we're all of course members) and so is subsidised to an extent - it's far cheaper than any other non-college bar in Oxford. It also offers a lunch menu of sandwiches, burgers and baguettes during term, as well as chocolate, crisps and soft drinks. Payment is by cash only, but there is an automatic cash machine. Pool, table football, darts, pinball and arcade machines are available.

Opening times:
Monday-Saturday 10:30-14:00 and 17:30-23:00
Sunday 19:00-22:30

Snack lunches are served from 11:30-13:30 Monday-Friday in term-time.

Chapel

The College Chapel is, somewhat unsurprisingly, located in Chapel Quad. This particular area of the College is virtually unchanged since the seventeenth century, and is adorned with stained glass windows and other attractive features of interest that we are justifiably proud of.

All JCR and MCR members are welcome to become involved in Chapel activities, including our renowned choir. Anyone interested in auditioning for the choir should contact the Chaplain or the Senior Organ Scholar.

Times of regular chapel services are as follows:

  • Evensong, Sundays 6:00pm (traditional Choral Evensong, with a sermon, followed by pre-dinner drinks in the Beckington Room)
  • Compline, Tuesdays 9:30pm (candlelit, sung service)
  • Holy Communion, Wednesdays and Feast Days 6:00pm (sung service)
  • Morning Prayer, weekdays 8:45am (short, said service)
  • Evening Prayer, weekdays 5:30pm (short, said service)

A Roman Catholic Mass is held approximately once per term in Chapel, the date and time of which are posted in the Lodge.

The Junior Common Room (JCR)

The JCR

The JCR is the undergraduate equivalent of the MCR and is located in Chapel Quad, on the ground floor between staircases 5 and 6. Despite what some undergrads may tell you, all graduates are also full members of the JCR and are perfectly entitled to use its facilities. The JCR contains vending machines, sofas, newspapers, a large television with video and DVD players, and a games console. There is also a kitchen area, with kettle, microwave etc. JCR tea takes place from 4:00-5:30pm each day in term-time, with tea, tea-time food and cheap stationary sold. There is no code needed to enter the JCR, and it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Other JCR facilities include a photocopier (located opposite the staircase 5 entrance to the JCR; pre-pay cards are available to buy at JCR tea) and a fairly extensive DVD library (email their DVD rep to request the DVD you want, it will be pidged to you before second hall, and you must pidge it back before 5pm the next day - for more details see the Lincoln JCR website).

Both the JCR and MCR Executives work together to present proposals to the College, meet with College officials, sit on certain committees in an advisory capacity, and lobby for improvements.

Quads

Grove Quad

Lincoln has two quadrangles or 'quads', Main Quad and Chapel Quad, and additionally a third grassy area commonly known as Grove Quad (although it isn't technically a quadrangle) or 'the Grove'. You are not allowed to walk on the grass in Main Quad or Chapel Quad (this rule tends to be enforced rather strictly!), but during Trinity Term and the Long Vacation students are allowed to use Grove Quad as an outdoor common room, and play croquet (but no other ball games or sports) on the grass.

Bear Lane

Bear Lane Complex

Situated behind some imposing doors on Bear Lane (just down the road from the College main site) is a large accommodation block for nearly half the first-year graduates. Admittedly less beautiful than the EPA Centre, this block is however extremely convenient for town and College. Despite the proximity to the bustling town centre, the rooms here are remarkably peaceful, and students can enjoy the central nature of the location without a suffering a significant amount of noise.

The Bear Lane Complex also includes a TV Room, a computer room, and a laundry room.

The EPA Centre

Lincoln's newest accommodation was finished in 2005, and is found on Museum Road near the University Science Area, about 5-10 minutes' walk from College. The (very swanky) EPA centre is comprised of flats of two or three, each with a kitchen, dining and lounge area. All the rooms have ensuite bathroom facilities.

This complex is used by College for conferences, so is well-kept with dainty trees and bubbling fountains. A new common room has just been opened here with a 50-inch TV and DVD and sumptuous leather sofas. There is also a computer room, a laundry room, and a gym in this area, and a 24 hour porters' lodge in case you accidentally lock yourself out.

Computer Rooms and IT Office

Computer Room (Bear Lane)

All rooms are provided with Ethernet connections so that you can connect your own computer to the internet, but there are also public computer rooms available. The JCR computer room is located on the first floor of Lincoln House (on Turl Street, opposite the main college entrance), and both the Bear Lane Complex and the EPA Centre have their own computer rooms. All computer rooms have black-and-white laser printers, and the College provides everyone with a generous free printing allowance, as well as paper for the printers.

The IT office is found at the top of Staircase 4 on Main Quad. If you have any queries about computing or IT facilities, please contact the College IT Manager.
